Mr Maxwell Kofi Jumah, Deputy Minister of Local Government, Rural Development and Environment, on Monday said Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies were established to promote development at the grassroots.
He said assembly members were expected to have good knowledge of development and problems in their areas to enable them contribute effectively towards deliberations at meetings.
Mr Jumah who is also the Member of Parliament for Asokwa was addressing a durbar of chiefs and people of Shama Traditional Area at Shama as a prelude to the inauguration of the newly created Shama District Assembly on Friday.
He denied claims that the assembly could not operate effectively and efficiently stressing that there were many sources of revenue in the area that could be utilised to supplement their share of the Assemblies Common Fund.
Mr Jumah advised the assembly to ensure proper planning of communities to avoid haphazard development in future.
Mrs Angelina Baiden-Amissah, Member of Parliament for Shama and Deputy Minister of Education, Science and Sports, called on the people to co-operate with the assembly to undertake its mandate to strengthen the country's decentralisation process.
She urged them to accept the challenge with the creation of the new district and honour their responsibilities to the assembly.
