The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has described its Democracy Under Attack demonstration as one of the most peaceful political protests in Ghana's history, praising participants for their discipline and commending the security services and media for their roles in the exercise.

Speaking on JoyNews' The Pulse on Thursday, August 6, after the demonstration, the party's Deputy General Secretary, Haruna Mohammed, expressed gratitude to party members, civil society organisations and the leadership of the NPP for what he said was a well-organised and orderly protest.

Mr Mohammed said the NPP had consistently urged supporters to remain peaceful throughout the march because the objective was to defend democracy without undermining public order.

"This is one of the peaceful demonstrations that we have had. From the beginning, we cautioned participants to be very civil because whilst we intend to protect democracy, we must also make sure that there is stability and orderliness in how we conduct ourselves throughout this process," he stated.

He thanked demonstrators for adhering to the party's directives, saying their conduct contributed to the peaceful nature of the protest.

Mr Mohammed also commended the media for its coverage of the event, revealing that the party had insisted journalists be allowed to perform their duties without hindrance.

"We had insisted that the media be given the opportunity to participate and report accurately on what was happening. We were forceful about that, and we thank the security services for listening to us and also the media for being able to participate," he said.

The Democracy Under Attack demonstration saw the NPP march to the Supreme Court and Jubilee House, where the party presented petitions over what it describes as arbitrary arrests, selective justice and threats to Ghana's democratic institutions.
