Professor Adei has supported Ghana Education Service’s (GES) decision to de-boardinise seven students from Ejisuman SHS for their viral ‘sex talk’ session video, saying it is in order and “the least they deserved”.

On Monday, an NGO, Africa Education Watch (AEW) condemned the GES’s decision to de-boardinise the students arguing that letting them leave the boarding house to be accommodated in “hotels without parental or school control will expose them to further delinquency and harm.”

The NGO also added in its statement that the choice of disciplinary action is archaic and denies the girls’ their access and human rights to education.

However, speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show, Tuesday, Professor Adei said, “when such things happen you have to be surgical with your dealing and I think that to me [de-boardinisation] is the least punishment that they would have deserved.”

He explained that a third of the students in the Ejisuman SHS are day students because there is not enough education and, therefore, if a student misbehaves, “and the discipline is ‘you have been de-boardinised’, you haven’t been denied an education.”

“They haven’t been dismissed,” he stressed.

The former GIMPA Rector explained that AEW’s condemnation of the school’s decision has been taken out of context.

“We should see it in the context of the 2000 or the 3000 students and not focus on the seven alone. At the moment, being in the boarding house is a privilege. Why? Because as a nation, unfortunately, we cannot have facilities for all the children now.

Therefore, if you have abused it we are going to deny you the privilege. Let others come in and you go to the other side. Not everybody is in the boarding house,” he said.

He added, “if you get access to the boarding house you must see it as a privilege until of course one day we are able to put everybody in the boarding house.”

In the viral video, one of the girls justified having multiple sexual partners and condemned girls who refuse to have sex with men. She then went on to encourage girls to sleep with men, especially if they are offering monetary rewards. Her classmates were seen in the video cheering her on as she made the cringe-worthy comments. Outraged by the development, the school de-boardinised the girls
