The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) is calling for strict enforcement of government directive mandating public agencies to deploy 60 per cent of building materials locally for their projects. The Council’s Building and Roads Research Institute (BRRI) says the 2010 directive has been ignored at the expense of efforts to explore cheaper alternatives to expensive imported building and construction materials. Director for BRRI, Eugene Atiemo, says local assemblies must take the lead in the campaign to utilize locally- developed technology. The Institute is undertaking a sensitization programme to promote its pozzolana cement and other products which are the result of years of research. According to Mr. Atiemo, such products have proven to be comparatively of higher quality and more affordable than imported materials. He said there are abundant deposits of raw materials for sustainable production to meet local and external demand. Pozzolana Cement, Ghana, has persistently complained about low patronage of its products, leading to virtual collapse of its factory. Mr. Atiemo hopes continued public education would help reverse the trend for the better. He hopes by engaging District and Municipal Assemblies, the campaign to increase local building material input in construction will trickle down to individuals in communities to boost demand.
