C/R Minister inspects projects at UEW

The government has for the past 12 months provided some additional facilities at the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) to enable it to increase its intake. The facilities, which cost ยข3.4 trillion include lecture halls, residential accommodation for lectures, examination halls, auditoriums, library complex, Amu Music Theater and Music department. The Pro-Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Akwasi Asabere-Ameyaw disclosed this when he and the Registrar of the University, Mr. C.Y. Akwaa-Mensah jointly conducted the Central Regional Minister, Nana Ato Arthur to inspect the facilities, most of which had been completed and are being used. Briefing the Regional Minister, Prof. Asabere-Ameyaw said the projects were funded by the GETfund administration. He noted that the University has been increasing its intake annually to enable it train adequate teachers to meet the nation's requirements. The Pro-Vice Chancellor appealed to the Regional Minister to impress upon the District Assembly to construct fence wall to stop market, which has been created in front of the University at the South campus from extending to the campus. He asked Nana Arthur to use his office to help stop encroachment on the University lands, saying the University would need an expansion but the land was not there for that purpose. Prof. Asabere-Ameyaw said the National Sports College was serving the purpose it was established and appealed to the Minister to merge it with the University to enhance soccer in the country. Nana Arthur said the government attached importance to quality education to speed up the development of the nation and would therefore continue to improve the infrastructure at the Universities to enable it to turn out qualified personnel. He assured the authorities of the University that encroachment and other land issues would be settled to pave way for development projects. The Regional Minister pointed out that the government would offer assistance to tertiary institutions to perform their expected roles in enhancing education.
