A virologist at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Dr. Michael Owusu says until a vaccine is introduced, there will continue to be a surge in the number of Covid-19 cases in Ghana.
According to him, the sudden increase is to be expected, since the majority of Ghanaians have thrown caution to the wind regarding the safety protocols.
"We cannot stop this. We will keep having waves, and once we are not immune, our numbers will keep rising and falling, until one day we hear of a vaccine which is available to many," he said.
His comment follows a survey carried out by the Ghana Health Service which indicated that most Ghanaians are abandoning the protocols; that is the wearing of masks and regular washing of hands with soap under running water.
The Service also stated that the reduction in adherence had moved from 44.3% to 5%.
Speaking to JoyNews' Evans Mensah, Dr. Owusu said in the absence of the vaccine, Ghanaians must effectively manage their affairs and take full precaution as they go about their business.
“If we do not adhere to these protocols, we may get to the point where other countries are.
"We are not there yet, but it’s a signal. We have to be very careful and manage our situation and bring it under control so we never get to where others are," he said.
