Ghana's vaccination efforts so far seem to be yielding positive results on persons who have received either a single dose or both doses.
At the moment, a total of 1 271,393 persons have been vaccinated, according to the Ghana Health Service (GHS).
Among this number, 865,522 have received their first dose, whilst 405,971 have received both doses.
Coordinator for Severe and Critical Covid-19 cases at the Ghana Infectious Disease Center (GIDC), Dr Christian Owoo, has revealed the persons who have had a single or both doses of covid-19 vaccines have been spares severe illness and deaths.
Speaking on Joy FM's Ultimate Health on Sunday, Dr Christian Owoo explained that the evidence shows that those vaccinated have escaped mortality.
He said, "What we have demonstrated very clearly is that those who have been vaccinated seem to have been spared severe and critical conditions and mortality.
"I can tell you categorically that not a single person in our facility at the GIDC who has been vaccinated has died since we started vaccinating among those we have admitted."
He continued that "the population that have ended up in our ICU that has received even their first jab have been in the minority, actually way below 5% of those we have admitted in critical care and all of them have done well and gone home."
However, the sad news is that according to Dr Christian Owoo, who is also the clinical lead at the Ghana Infectious Disease Centre, most of those who have died have not had the opportunity to receive their vaccines.
"Majority of our very sick patients who have stayed long and those who have died have all had absolutely no injection."
Through the Health Ministry, the government is currently racing to secure enough vaccines to inoculate the population.
According to the Director-General of the Ghana Health Service, Dr Patrick Kumah-Aboagye, Ghana will soon receive over 1.2 million Pfizer vaccines through COVAX, whilst the African Union will also deliver 17,000 Johnson and Johnson vaccines.
In addition, COVAX will supply over 240,000 AstraZeneca vaccines.
