A five-member delegation from the Council of State, led by Chairman Nana Otuo Siriboe, visited Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin to discuss recent developments within the legislature, which led to an indefinite adjournment of parliamentary sessions.

During the meeting, the Council sought firsthand insights into the situation that has stalled parliamentary activities.

After an in-depth discussion, Council members expressed their readiness to support Speaker Bagbin and the House leadership in addressing any obstacles to reconvening Parliament.

Speaker Bagbin provided an overview of the issues currently facing Parliament and reiterated his commitment to upholding democratic values and fostering the country’s progress. He assured the Council of his dedication to Ghana’s democratic development.

The Council of State commended Speaker Bagbin for his efforts in maintaining the nation’s democratic reputation through his leadership of Parliament. Speaker Bagbin’s roles include serving as President of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) International, the Conference of Speakers and Presidents of African Legislatures (COSHAL), and as an executive member of the International Legislative Advisory Council of the U.S. National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL). Nana Otuo Siriboe encouraged the Speaker to continue his commendable work in promoting Ghana’s democratic interests.

Speaker Bagbin shared that he is set to lead Ghana's parliamentary delegation to the 67th CPA International Conference in Sydney, Australia, from November 3 to 8, where he will officially hand over his position as CPA President to the Speaker of the Parliament of New South Wales, Australia.

Joining him on this trip will be former Majority Leader Hon. Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu, House leaders, Whips, the Clerk to Parliament, and other Parliamentary Service officials.

Despite his attendance at the CPA conference, Speaker Bagbin noted that he plans to return to Ghana earlier than scheduled due to a request from Members of Parliament for an early recall of the House. He indicated that his office has initiated steps to reconvene Parliament in early November.

Speaker Bagbin was recently re-elected to a second term as President of COSHAL, reflecting his ongoing influence in African legislative leadership.
