Three suspected armed robbers who attempted to wrest an AK 47 rifle from a policeman at Dzorwulu on Saturday did not only fail in their adventure but also lost one of their members in the process.
The policeman, whose name is being withheld for security reasons, shot and killed one of his assailants after overpowering them.
According to Chief Superintendent Kwesi Duku, the Tesano Divisional Commander, the policeman had been on duty at the residence of General Joshua Hamidu at Dzorwulu on Friday evening.
He said the policeman closed from duty at about 4:30 a.m. and while he was walking along the street to pick a vehicle back home, he was attacked by three men on an unregistered motorbike near the Golden Age School.
Chief Supt Duku said the robbers, armed with knives and a locally made pistol, snatched the policeman's mobile phone from him and then struggled, with him with the view to snatching his AK 47 rifle as well.
He said the robbers attempted to fire at him but, he managed to overpower them and fired at them instead. Two of them 'immediately ran away, leaving the unregistered motorbike and the deceased behind.
The policeman then went to the Achi¬mota Police Station where he lodged a complaint and went home afterwards.
In the morning, the Achimota Police had a call that a dead body with gunshot wounds had been found a few metres away from where the incident happened.
The body has been deposited at the Police Hospital mortuary awaiting post mortem and identification, while investigations continue.
In a related development, two men suspected to be members of an armed robbery gang which has been terrorizing residents of Abeka, Achimota and Tesano and its environs have been arrested.
The two, Kwaku Dankyi, 25, and Kwame Akumaning, 18, were arrested at their hideout at Capital Hill, Ofankor, following a tip-off.
He said the two were spotted by one of their previous victims who alerted the Mile 7 Police at Achimota who, in turn, dispatched some policemen to the area to effect the arrest of the two suspects.
He said an identification parade would be held at the station within the week to enable victims of armed robbery attacks around those areas to come and identify their attackers.
