The Police Administration has interdicted Police Sergeant Anthony Dzameshie for allegedly shooting a suspect in police cells at Bunso Police station.
The victim, George Larbi, a farmer was being held in the station for allegedly stealing a water hose belonging to his master at Akyem Nsutam.
Deputy Commissioner of Police and Eastern Regional Police Commander, Felix Asare Darko, speaking to newsmen said Dzameshie was alleged to be defending himself from a group of people who had besieged the police station.
He said on Saturday, February 2, Dzameshie was on duty from 1800 hours to 0600 hours the next day and around 1930 hours, two people came to the station to bail the suspect but he told them that the station officer was not available.
DCOP Darko said they left and returned with four other men who argued with Dzameshie to release the suspect and in the process they started heckling him and in an attempt to defend himself, Dzameshie inadvertently fired his AK 47 rifle, which was incidentally placed on rapid.
He said as a result, one of the bullets went through the cell gate and hit the thigh of the suspect who was in the cell.
DCOP Darko said the suspect was rushed to Kibi Government Hospital where he was referred to Koforidua Central Hospital where he is still on admission.
The victim on his hospital bed told newsmen that he was hired as a farm labourer on a cabbage farm at Akyem Nsutam, but the owner refused to pay him and others their charge of 45 Ghana Cedis after several months.
He said he took the water hose and sold it for 40 Ghana Cedis after which he was arrested and detained at the cell.
