Contaminated meat for market

The Food and Drugs Board says it is constrained in ensuring that butchers comply with regulations on the slaughtering of animals for the market. According to Joy News butchers in some slaughter areas in Accra continue to use car tyres to remove the hides of animals, a practice that the FDB says contaminates the meat. The environmental conditions at the slaughter areas were also found to be unhygienic, the Station said. The Board admits that several educational campaigns on the best practices in slaughtering animals had not yielded the intended results. The head of the Animal Products and Bio Safety at the FDB Dr. Mohammed Arthur explained the scattering of slaughter areas made it difficult to monitor the butchers and prosecute offenders Dr. Arthur advocated the construction of more abattoirs in Accra to ensure that butchers complied with the regulation. He said the long distance that butchers needed to travel to slaughter their animals served as a disincentive.
