#SaveGhanaFootball organizer Veronica Commey has launched a scathing attack on the government, criticizing what she describes as an “emotional decision” regarding the construction of community AstroTurfs across the country.
Her comments come in response to the ongoing stadium crisis, where none of the national stadiums meet the required international standards.
The Baba Yara Sports Stadium, which recently hosted Ghana's game against Angola, had its license withdrawn by CAF due to an "unsuitable playing field."
This decision means Ghana could host their next game at home against Sudan in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers abroad.
"When you listen to the current government, they are happily touting everywhere that they have invested more in infrastructure in sports than any more government," Veronica said in an interview with Joy 99.7 FM.
"I am sorry but the AstroTurfs that they build in communities was just an emotional decision and why do I say this, because if you go to the one at Madina or everywhere, if you say it was just for the community, for recreation, you are charging like 400 cedis for an hour and half, how many people can afford that?
"Most of these teams who would have loved to play their games there, the pitches do not meet the standard."
Meanwhile, the Ministry has instructed the National Sports Authority (NSA), responsible for facility upkeep, to address issues with the pitch at Baba Yara Stadium.
The NSA has relied heavily on renting national stadiums as a primary revenue stream, but the strategy has backfired, often leaving the facilities in poor condition.
