Kumasi-based lady golfer Constance Awuni has made history by winning the Vodafone Asantehene Gold Golf Cup a record seven times.

She has won the prestigious golf competition seven times since 2015 with the exception of the 2020 edition.

Constance Awuni set a new record by winning with a gross score of 169 at the weekend at the Royal Gold Club in Kumasi.

She was followed by Bernice Dzitorwoko of the Celebrity Gold Club Accra with 172 points.

Congratulating Constance Awuni for the feat chalked, His Royal Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II tasked Madam Awuni to consider moving from the amateur space to play professionally since her dominance in that division has been overwhelming.

“Let me say thank you to the lady Constance Awuni who has won this competition seven times. This time through the management of the Golf Club I will give her some money as an award. I advise that she join the professional rank and win more awards for us. Is she ready to be a professional, Otumfuo quizzed? I wish she will, then we will sponsor her to become our first lady professional from Kumasi”.

His Royal Majesty also stressed the need for the young ones to be encouraged to play golf. Otumfuo called for a change in the public perception of golf which many believe to be a game for the rich and affluent in society.

“We also have to impress on the young ones to play. We need to encourage the young ones, I know Frank Adu has started doing that and other people are also doing the same. We need to attract the younger ones. The notion that golf is for rich people is not true. Imagine if you buy a set of clubs, it lasts you for many years. The people who play golf are ordinary people but they are exercising by playing golf, so it’s not for rich people and that catchphrase should be disabused, Otumfuo emphasized.”

The 66th Asantehene Gold Cup attracted a record entry of over 200 golfers drawn from various golf clubs across the country as well as other countries on the continent including Nigeria, Togo, Uganda, Gambia and South Africa.

For the first time in the competition's history, 14 lady professional golfers participated alongside their male counterparts in Ghana’s most prestigious golf tournament.

While the professional golfers played over four days, the amateurs played over two days with Kumasi the host club sweeping majority of the trophies.

In the ladies' professional event, Irene Nakalembe of the Entebbe Golf Club in Uganda emerged winner with a total score of 314 after four days of play. She took home a cash prize of GHC 35,000.00. She was closely followed by Vivian Kwami of La Cote D’Ivoire.

In the men's professional event, Ghana’s number one of Africa’s current best golfers, Vincent Torgah continued his dominance of the event by winning with a two-under score of 278 points. He took home a cash prize of Ghc 55,000.00.

In the main amateur men's event, Ezekiel Afisco of the Royal Golf Club exhibited another outstanding display of golf to win with 300 points over four days. Nicholas Appiah of the Celebrity golf club in Accra emerged second, a distant nine shots behind the winner Afisco.
