Conquerors conquer Cosmos in Rugby cliffhanger

Newcomers Conquerors SC moved to the top of the Ghana Rugby Club Championship (GRCC) log after beating reigning Champions Cosmos Buffaloes RFC in a nerve racking encounter at the Accra Sports Stadium.

In a game described by match referee Mr. Frederic Roux as “The best Rugby match ever witnessed in Ghana” Conquerors beat Cosmos Buffaloes by 18-12 to close down the curtain on the 2015/16 GRCC round robin phase.

The two teams have meanwhile booked a place in the semi-final with 1st placed Conquerors SC (29 points) pitching their strength against 4th placed Idas Sports RFC (16 points).

Second place Buffaloes (26 points) will come up against Dansoman Hurricane with 18 points.

According to Mr. Simba Mangena, coach of Conquerors SC, he is content with the aggression and enthusiasm exhibited by the Cosmos side which he said helped in building the resilience of his side.

“You know, at the end of every Rugby game there has to be a winner and I’m happy with Cosmos Buffaloes for giving us a tough game. However, we won the game and I believe my team can win the cup because we have the potential”, he said.

Mr. Simba cited indiscipline as the major challenge facing the GRCC and therefore advised all players, officials and coaches to be more disciplined both on and off the pitch.

The captain of Cosmos Buffaloes, Michael Ako Wilson, said that the encounter with Conquerors was tougher and more professional than any of the international matches he has played in and that he sees a bright and promising future for Ghana Rugby.

“All teams just need to keep up their levels of discipline and intensity and frequency of training and Ghana will become a force to be reckoned with on the continent,” Wilson said.

He promised Conquerors another cliffhanger encounter if the two were to book a final.

Speaking to the press, Mr. Steve Noi, match commissioner, classified all matches played on the day as magnificent adding that the match between Conquerors and Cosmos was the match of the season.

Mr. Noi expressed excitement and complimented all players for their commitment and the level at which they improved the game this season.

He said there will probably be week break services which will give injured players of clubs some time to recover and also look ahead towards an exciting semi-final games.

None of the Cape Coast teams, Griffons RFC who ended 5th with 10 championship points  and UCC Spartans RFC who ended 7th with 1 point, managed to get into the semi finals.

According to the coach of Griffons RFC, Mr. Clement Dennis, the 2015/16 GRCC provided the CentWest teams with a chance to find their feet after some upheavals in the area.

Mr. Dennis is confident that a CentWest team will make the top 4 in the 2016/17 GRCC edition of the tournament.

He however added that the area is spending considerable time and effort in youth development under the banner of the World Rugby “Get Into Rugby” programme and that this will definite bear valuable fruits in the future.

As always the day’s programme included a development clinic for kids followed by boys and girls matches.
