The President John Agyekum Kufuor has congratulated all 17 aspirants who participated in the flagbearership race for preserving the unity of the party.
Mr. Kufuor said the decency with which the aspirants participated in the contest was a pointer to their willingness to maintain the peace the party had enjoyed over the years.
The President said this when he addressed delegates, aspirants and party members at the congress grounds at the Great Hall of the University of Ghana.
The President took delegates down the memory lane when he said the party which follows the Danquah-Busia philosophy had since the inception of the tradition had always elected flag bearers by democratic means.
“The party issues out of a tradition that has displayed attributes with a strong streak of spirituality. Even within the confines of the rigours of democratic selection, we live above the basement of common sense and pragmatism,” he said.
Mr. Kufuor said results at the congress affirmed an innate wisdom and mystique which combined to hallmark the party as no ordinary one.
For now, Nana Addo Danquah Akufo Addo, the former minister, and MP for Abuakwa North has been declared winner after three months of vigorous campaign, with all indications of his readiness to lead the Danquah-Busia family through next year’s elections for a renewed mandate.
