A group calling itself the Concerned Members of the University of Cape Coast Governing Council has disassociated themselves from the purported termination of the appointment of the Vice Chancellor, Prof Johnson Nyarko Boampong.
According to the group, they were shocked by the letter solely and privately written by the Chairman of the council, Prof H.S. Amonoo, and can confirm that there has been no decision regarding the termination.
In a statement signed by the executives of the group on August 1, they said, “We members of Council can state emphatically that no such decision has been made by Council in any of our meetings whatsoever.
"Council met on 30th of July, 2023 and no such matter was discussed, neither was any such decision made. We ask the Chairman to produce for us the minutes of the said meeting which took this decision.“
The release continued that the decision was carried out solely by the Chairman of the Council, with gross disregard for the membership of the council.
“We are by this letter disassociating ourselves from the decision communicated by the Chairman of Council purporting to terminate the appointment of the Vice Chancellor and wish to further state emphatically the Vice-Chancellor is still at post and doing his duty with the support of the entire university,” portion of the release added.
The release added that the purported termination was served via WhatsApp, which was contrary to the university statutes.
Additionally, the release suggested that this act was intended to sabotage the recent appointment of the Vice Chancellor as the Chairman of Vice-Chancellors Ghana and the Board Chairman of the Association of West African Universities.
On the back of this, the Concerned members said the “Vice Chancellor's term was validly renewed by a duly constituted Council. This therefore is the decision that Council members uphold and not the purported arbitral revocation by just one individual and hereby request the chair to withdraw this letter which was done without authority and ask all members to ignore same."
In a previous press release, the Governing Council of UCC announced the termination of the appointment of Prof Johnson Nyarko Boampong as the Vice-Chancellor.
A notice signed by the Chairman of the University’s Governing Council, Prof Harold S. Amonoo-Kuofi, on Wednesday, July 31, confirmed the termination.
The notice clarified that any extension beyond the initial term is not recognised by the Governing Council.
