The Coalition on the Right to Information has kicked against any amendment of the Whistle Blowers Act.
The coalition, made up of civil society organizations, says attempts by the Attorney General to amend the law barely a year after its passage shows desperation on the part of government to weaken the principles of the act.
The Attorney General, Joe Ghartey has expressed his intention to have the law amended to cater for some of the flaws identified by the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice in its report on the case in which a former board member of the Export Development and Investment Fund accused former Trade Minister Alan Kyeremanten of financial impropriety.
Among the suggested amendments is the provision of more protection for individuals against who allegations are made under the law. The AG also wants the law extended to cover private institutions.
Additionally the AG is seeking to amend the law to discourage the leveling of false and malicious allegations.
But Florence Nakazibew, a member of the coalition said there is no need for an amendment of the law now.
