Club concedes 227 goals in 11 games

A village football team has been branded the worst in Britain after losing 11 games on the trot and conceded a staggering 227 goals – including a 55-0 drubbing. Hapless Madron FC have suffered a demoralising start to the season and let in 227 goals since the opener in August having scored just two goals themselves. The team’s worst result of the season came against Illogan Reserves when they were hammered 55-0 earlier this month – an average of more than a goal every two minutes. Stand-in manager Alan Davenport admitted Madron FC are ”probably the worst team in Britain” after their ”embarrassing” string of results but praised his players for turning up. The Saturday league team have been thrashed week in week out after a mass exodus of players following their promotion last season. They could only muster eight players last Saturday and went down 22-0 to St Buryan – but only seven players took to the field as they lost 55-0 on November 20. Alan, 68, who has taken temporary charge, said of the 55-0 drubbing: "It’s a struggle when you only have seven players and no goalkeeper. One of the lads went in goal and did his best. "I know everybody is probably laughing at us but we will battle on. "We will definitely keep playing every week and fulfil our fixtures until the end of the season. We have no plans to stop. "Some of the players aren’t that brilliant so they are just happy to play. They can’t get games with anyone else. "Fair play to them for turning up really. It would be easy to just give in and let their heads drop but we’ll fight on.” The club was ecstatic after being promoted from the Cornish Mining Division two last season as they topped the league. But a mass exodus of players, followed by the manager’s departure, left them struggling for players of any quality. Now the depleted squad, which is made up of people from the local pub and students, take to the field every Saturday for what has become a weekly pummelling. They lost their opening matches 11-0, 4-1 and 16-0 before going down to heavy defeats including 27-0 and 27-1 thrashings, leaving their goal difference at a staggering -225. But the game on November 20 really took the biscuit. Madron FC were 24-0 down at half time and went on to lose 55-0 to Illogan with one opposition player bagging ten goals. And on Saturday, they suffered a 22-0 drubbing at the hands of second place St Buryan. But amazingly, they are not bottom of the league, as Storm FC had points deducted for not turning up to one of their matches earlier in the season. Alan added: ”We won the second division last season and so are now playing against first division teams, but our lads on the new team are finding it very hard,” added Alan. "When we played Illogan it didn’t make them look good beating us as there was no real competition. "I’m extremely disappointed. At the minute I would think we are probably the worst team in the country.” Illogan manager Mark Waters said: ”Nobody enjoys games like that. We certainly didn’t enjoy it. "I have nothing but admiration for the seven Madron players, but it does make a mockery of the league.” Source: swns.com
