Chairman of the biggest opposition party, National Democratic Congress (NDC) has been cited as a person of interest in the spree of kidnappings and fire outbreaks in the country.
A letter from the Police Criminal Investigations Department inviting Samuel Ofosu Ampofo stated that “some persons picked up for interrogation and investigation have mentioned your name as part of a grand scheme designed to cause fear and panic in the country.”
The CID has, therefore, summoned the top opposition politician, asking him to report at the CID headquarters on Thursday, May 9, at 2:00 pm.
“We look forward to your co-operation in this matter of National Interest,” the police wrote.
Why is the new information crucial?
A leaked recording of an alleged meeting of top NDC members hit the media on February 27.
In the audio, a voice alleged to be that of the NDC Chairman is heard among other things scheming to kidnap political opponents.
“...Nobody has slept in his house. They even went to attack traders [and] some Imams had to come and plead for them. People will also start capturing your mothers and fathers and keeping them hostage until you show yourself up. So we need to go back quickly to the drawing board and strategise,” he laid out his plans to the audience alleged to be NDC communicators.

Ofosu Ampofo and the NDC have since denied any wrongdoing relating to the contents of the leaked tape.
According to the party, government bugged their offices and got a recording and doctored same.
The police have since arraigned Mr Ampofo over the contents of the tape.
The NDC National Chairman, Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, is already standing trial for conspiracy to assault a public officer and conspiracy to cause harm after he was secretly recorded allegedly outlining plans to cause mayhem.
The case was adjourned to May 27 on Monday. The Defense said they were served with the evidence late prompting the adjournment.
