Ghana has applied for a concessionary loan from the Chinese government to begin a Public Security System (PSS) project in the country.
When the loan is granted, the project would be executed by ZTE, a leading Chinese global provider of telecommunications equipment and network solutions.
The project, known as Global Open Trunking Architecture (GoTA), is based on CDMA technology, which provides push-to-talk services including phone calls, short messages, data communication (e-mail and Internet), group call and trunking dispatch.
This was announced by the Vice-President of ZTE, Mr Wu Zengqi, when African journalists currently on a working visit to Beijing, China, visited the office of ZTE yesterday.
Mr Wu said ZTE had deployed the PSS project in over 20 countries including Ghana, Senegal, Nyanmar, Malaysia, Vietnam, Norway and Sweden but only the Ghana and Senegal projects had applied for the concessionary loans from the Chinese government.
Users of the GoTA project in Ghana, he said, would be government institutions, ministries and departments, police, prisons, immigration, fire service, the armed forces, NADMO, the airport, as well as hospitals and hotels.
Mr Wu said the PSS project would help the government to cut down telecommunication charges substantially and internal communication like phone calls, short messages, e-mail and Internet nationwide.
He said the government and the public would benefit immensely from the project as it would improve efficiency in government administration, enhance government ability to deal with accidents, improve communication and boost foreign investment.
