The Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) has taken custody of a child prostitute who attempted to take her own life.
The thirteen-year-old girl said she is unhappy with the curtailment of her freedom at the social welfare shelter where she has been living for the past two weeks.
In an exclusive interview with Joy FM’s Yaa Asamoah on Monday, the victim narrated a harrowing episode of her daily chore of sexual rounds averaging five men per day in parts of Accra.
Complaining of chest pains, with sporadic coughs, ostensibly caused by the nooze she tied around her neck, the young girl said she makes a maximum of GH¢50 or GH¢60 per day.
Unfortunately, she has little control over how the hard-earned money is used, accusing a woman (her madam) of taking the money away after each working day.
The woman, said to be at the Kokomba market in Accra, allegedly recruited her and three others into the business.
She buys for them clothes, medicine and other things they find necessary and attractive.
Asked how she charges for her services, the victim noted it depends on the size of the man’s penis.
A big penis attracts GH¢4.00 per session, she said.
The ignorant victim said her numerous sexual encounters have been without condoms because she has been told she is too young to get pregnant.
To prevent HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases, she regularly sits naked astride a bawl or bucket of hot water and dettol so the vapour would cleanse her vagina.
Her ‘customers’, she alleged, include 'police men', and workers of 'Zoomlion' and 'taxi drivers'.
The young girl attempeted suicide during one night at the temporary shelter provided her and her colleagues at Osu, but her colleagues saw her and allerted the authorities before she could make the deadly jump.
Public Relations Officer at DOVVSU, Chief Inspector Irene Oppong who confirmed the suicide attempt to Joy News said the police have mounted a search for the woman who recruited the young girls into the illegal trade.
