The Chief of Banda Boase in the Banda District of the Bono Region has reiterated the need for Ghanaians, especially the youth, to act within the laws of the country to ensure violence-free elections on December 7.
Odeifor Dua Batabor Ligbi Wullitei II said acts of violence and lawlessness during elections are not the way to go as Ghanaians.
He stated that anything that undermines the fundamental peace and tranquillity the nation is enjoying should not be tolerated.
Speaking in an interview, the Chief of Banda Boase condemned the acts of violence and lawlessness that led to the stabbing and subsequent killing of a 28-year-old fresh graduate from Akim Oda Teacher Training College, Silas Wulochamey during the limited registration exercise in 2020.
It would be recalled that on Monday, July 13, 2020, Silas Wulochamey was allegedly accosted and stabbed to death by some thugs believed to be activists of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) at Banda Kabrono whilst returning from a visit to his pastor at Wenchi.
Subsequently, the Bono Regional Police Command made some arrests, and the suspects were arraigned.
Odeifor Wullitei, who is also Chairman of the election resolution committee in the Banda District, stated, “The chiefs and people of Banda felt embarrassed during that period when they travelled outside Banda because people point their fingers at us that this is a chief or a native of Banda”.
He encouraged Ghanaians to remember that a constitution governs the country, and everyone must respect and guard against its destruction.
According to him, a free, fair and non-violent general election will largely depend on the conduct of electoral officials and the individual voter, hence the need for all to exercise restraint before, during and after the 2024 general election.
The Banda Boase chief further stated that any disagreements concerning the electoral process must be addressed and resolved using the appropriate procedures by the law.
He stressed the necessity for an intensified peace campaign ahead of the December polls, especially in the Banda constituency.
“I think institutions like the National Commission on Small Arms and Light Weapons must be interested in starting their ‘‘Ballots Without Bullets’’ campaign in the Banda constituency now,” Odeifor Wullitei pointed out.
