A brace from Marcus Alonso, the winner two minutes from time, gave Chelsea a thrilling win over Spurs, whose tricky run, against them and at Wembley continues.

In the first 20 minutes, Chelsea was the better side, Antonio Conte tweaking his formation to block the middle of the pitch and his players breaking with conviction.

But it was not until Spurs grew into the game that they took the lead, Alonso pasting a brilliant free-kick past Hugo Lloris from 25 yards.

Spurs, though, did not take a backward step and dominated the majority of the second half.

Like Chelsea, though, they didn't score when at their best, and were also reliant upon a free-kick; with just eight minutes left, Michy Batshuayi, only just on as sub, headed Christian Eriksen's cross past Thibaut Courtois for an embarrassing own goal.

In theory, the question to be asking at that point was whether Chelsea could hold out for a draw.

But they are champions for a reason just as Spurs are Spurs for a reason, and sure enough, when Victor Wanyama lost concentration, David Luiz took advantage, setting in motion an attack which ended with Alonso driving him the winner off Lloris' heel.

So, Chelsea's title defence is up and running, while Spurs will have to endure the Wembley hoodoo pattern for a while longer.
