Prominent businessman and the Vice Chancellor of Cape Coast University, Sir Sam Jonah, has emphasised the transformative impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI).
Delivering a speech in Baltimore on Saturday, May 18, at Morgan State University, he urged the Class of 2024 to adapt and thrive in an evolving technological landscape.
His speech, under the headline "Curating a Brighter Future: Humanity & Artificial Intelligence," highlighted both the opportunities and responsibilities that come with technological progress.
The graduates listened as Sam Jonah began with a quote from the ancient Greek philosopher Heraclitus: "Change is the only constant."
He linked this timeless wisdom to the rapid technological advancements of today, particularly in the realm of AI.
"Your journey ahead is one of great promise with more technological help than any generation has ever received," Jonah told the graduates.
He noted that AI presents exciting opportunities but also significant responsibilities. Automation and robotization, he explained, will handle routine tasks and replace human labour in many fields, leading to disruptions in traditional industries.
To mitigate the risks of joblessness due to these disruptions, Jonah emphasized the need for upskilling and reskilling.
"Bright and industrious graduates and the workforce must commit to relearning to embrace new job opportunities and create new ones," he advised.
Sam Jonah also urged the graduates to participate actively in advocating for policies and regulations that benefit humanity, stressing that inaction would not address the challenges posed by AI.
He pointed out that counterparts in Asia and Africa have fully embraced the opportunities presented by AI, increasing global competition for jobs.
However, Sam Jonah also highlighted the potential for meaningful collaboration across the planet, thanks to AI.
"I strongly urge you to have a global and collaborative mindset in your quest for advancement," Jonah said, connecting this approach to the motto of Morgan State University: "Growing the Future, Leading the World."
In closing, Jonah reinforced the importance of adapting to technological changes and harnessing AI's potential for global collaboration and innovation.
