The Chief Executive of Ghana National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GNCCI), has said that banks and the Bank of Ghana must put in place measures to see to the smooth running of the cashless system.
This follows a recent attack on a bullion van at Adedenkpo, a suburb of Accra where a police officer, Emmanuel Osei and a hawker, Afua Badu were shot and killed in the process.
Another attack ensued on the Kosoa-Winneba road Thursday afternoon.
Mark Badu-Aboagye, speaking in an interview on PM Express, said there have been instances where businesses have been attacked beyond the bullion van incident because there was cash involved.
This, according to him, prompted the need to change the old ways of business transactions into a cashless format in order to ensure the safety of the people.
"I think that going cashless also requires a certain level of technology and financial architecture which we will ask that those in charge I mean the Central banks and the banks should quickly put in place all these financial architecture to ensure that if you are going cashless you are also secured and you are safe and that you can do transactions at your convenience and nothing will happen to you,” he said.
He also called for an intense education on businesses as well as the public for the cashless economy to be achieved.
“To move from these cash economy to cashless economy I think that education is very key. We should be able to convenience and educate people that it is more convenient and easier to do transactions without cash. So you can sit in your office transfer money, buy something and pay for it,” he stated.
He said the Chamber will “collaborate with stakeholders, banks and central banks to ensure that we educate our members and everybody who have something to do with business and transaction to go cashless from now on.”
“As a Chamber I think it has dawned on us that we also have to join with the discussion, join with the dedications,” he added.
