Call off strike and resume work – NLC orders UTAG

The National Labour Commission (NLC) has ordered the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) to call off its strike immediately.

In a statement issued on Friday, the Commission explained that the Association’s industrial action is illegal and does not conform to the laid down procedures.

On Monday, UTAG declared that it has laid down its tools due to government’s failure to address the worrying conditions of service of lecturers.

According to the Association, government has breached the timelines agreed for resolution. UTAG is, therefore, withdrawing teaching and related activities until further notice.

However, highlighting the outcome of an emergency meeting between government and UTAG, the Commission’s Executive Secretary, Ofosu Asamoah, said that the issue over which UTAG embarked upon the strike, has been settled.

And even though UTAG has other issues, the said grievances have not yet been formally presented to the employer, government, for redress.

As such, citing Section 139 of the Labour Act, 2003 (Act 651), NLC charged UTAG to “immediately call off the ongoing strike and resume work.”

The Commission also urged UTAG to formally submit the other issues it said are in dispute to the government for redress and negotiations.

“Report back to the Commission after one month, that is, February 6, 2022,” the statement added.
