Bryan Acheampong Foundation (BAF), a non-governmental organisation, has launched the Mentee Scholarship Project to support brilliant but needy pupils within the Kwahu East District in the Eastern Region.
The project would see pupils receive support from the primary school level up to the tertiary level.
On Tuesday, November 16, 2021, the launch was held at the Kwahu East District Assembly Conference Hall.
The project comes to join the general scholarship programmes being implemented by the Foundation, which include scholarships for undergraduate and postgraduate studies.
“The Foundation is not oblivious to the fact that the government of the day has implemented a system of free education right up from primary school to the senior high school level.
"In some cases, however, fee payment is necessary, particularly in private institutions. This is also an area where BAFs project comes in as highly beneficial,” part of a statement released by the Foundation after the launch reads.
The Foundation explained that the support would go not only be academically inclined but would delve into “emotional, psychological and even other forms of domestic support and counselling.
“Beneficiaries shall be provided with school bags, books, stationery, socks, and shoes, and in some cases, domestic amenities such as electricity and water supply shall be made available depending on their living conditions. The Foundation believes that their living conditions play a major role in how productive they are in their respective schools,” the statement continues.
The Foundation indicated that 30 students from various primary schools within the District have been awarded the scholarship.
This number was chosen from 63 pupils who were initially selected from all primary schools.
Kwahu East District Director of the Ghana Education Service (GES), Robert Andah Monney, speaking at the launch, lauded the Foundation for the intervention.
He appealed to various philanthropists within the District to support the Bryan Acheampong Foundation in the project's execution.
He also gave assurances that the GES shall encourage the teachers to give off their best to better the students' performance.
District Chief Executive of the area, Isaac Agyapong, also pledged support to the project in his remarks.
Director for Development at the Foundation, Frank Armoo, assured the public that BAF was committed to improving the general educational standards in the district and the country.
The Foundation says it spends ¢1.3 million annually as its contribution to the education sector alone.
Some of the dignitaries present at the launch are Nana Agyare Yeboah Asuamah II, Mahwerehene of Kwahu; Robert Andah Monney, District Education Director; Isaac Agyapong, District Chief Executive; and Rev. Opoku Asare, Resident head pastor at the Ramseyer Presbyterian Church.
