A superb Dominic Adiyiah strike late in extra time proved priceless as the Black Satellites of Ghana sailed through to the quarterfinals, seeing off a determined South African side by 2 goals to 1.
The Satellites for the second time in the competition came from a goal down to snatch victory, only this time in a hard way.
The delightful South African striker, Kermit Erasmus put the Amajitas ahead in the 58th with a well taken strike after he rounded up goal keeper Daniel Adjei and planted the ball into the yawning net for the opener.
It was a well deserved lead after the South Africans matched their more fancied African side with some fluid passing game and exposed the otherwise resolute defence of the Satellites.
If the Satellites kept a clean sheet throughout the first half, credit must be given to Daniel Adjei whose stupendous saves kept the Satellites chances alive.
The agile goal keeper, with a finger flick, brushed a goal bound well bent free kick in the 36th minute for a corner kick.
He again proved equal to the task after pulling off a superb save in the 38th minute from an Erasmus strike from close range.
The Satellites struggled for most part of the first half with the South Africans closing in on them and preventing their usual free flowing game.
Even though right back Samuel Inkoom was deadly with his rampaging runs up-field, his final delivery left strikers Adiyiah and Ransford Osei gnashing their teeth.
Osei who has managed a goal each in his three outings for the Satellites was kept silent by Ramahlwe Mphalele in defence for the Southern African country.
Adiyiah had the brightest opportunity to put the Satellites ahead late in the first half, but his final touch went flying high.
The Amajitas started the second half the same way they ended the first, dictating the pace but failed to make most of their chances count.
Then in the 58th minute, Erasmus, from a seemingly offside position trapped a high-flying cross on his left foot, beat the approaching Daniel Adjei and with a sliding finish got the noses of the Amajitas in front.
With the threat of early exit staring them in the face, the Satellites lifted up their game and one sumptuous cross from David Addy on the left met a powerful header from skipper Dede Ayew in the 66th minute for the equalizer.
Both sides with tired limbs pushed for the match winner but the game went into the wire.
The Satellites dug deep into their reservoir, and their efforts paid off in the extra time after striker Adiyiah sniffed out a true striker’s goal from 25 yards.
His overzealous celebration into the stance to tap the hands of disqualified Rabiu Mohammed earned him a yellow card.
Opoku Agyemang who came on for Ransford Osei earned a second yellow card and was harshly sent off for simulation by New Zealand referee Peter Oleary with some nine minutes left for play.
The Satellites defended the slim solitary lead to book a quarter final clash with Korea Republic on Friday.
