Boxing fans in the country would have more than enough to cheer about during Ghana’s 50th anniversary celebration.
Courtesy, the Commonwealth Sports Awards (CSA), Ambition Boxing Promotions, Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) and Metro TV, three high profile fights with the ability to satisfy the insatiable desire of the fans would be staged at the El-Wak Stadium on March 10.
Incidentally, the three fights, all commonwealth eliminators will make winners automatic candidates for the commonwealth titles in their respective weights.
On top of the bill is the Super Featherweight eliminator between West African Boxing Council (WABC) and African Boxing Union (ABU) champion, Yakubu Amidu and the sensational George Ashie.
Yakubu in his last fight indicated his willingness to fight a tougher opponent to prove his sceptics wrong and if that statement was anything to go by, then, the fight of his life is indeed here.
Ashie’s last fight in Ghanaian rings was a clash with Thomas Aryeetey who he defeated with a unanimous points decision with Yakubu stopping Zambian, Mutumbala to win the ABU title.
The fierce rivalry between Philip ‘sweet Pea’ Kotey and Joshua Okine would also be revived on the same night when they come face to face with each other.
The earlier bout between the two boxers was cancelled in the last minute as a result of ill-health of Kotey whose corner once again had sounded the warning bells.
In the Middleweight category, Ghanaian hard puncher, Charles Adamu will finally see his long cherished dream of fighting Michael Gbenga come into reality.
Mr. Al Hamilton of the CSA told the Times Sports on phone that this mouth-watering package was put together to give boxing fans something to cheer about during the anniversary celebration of the country.
But while we celebrate, it will provide answers to nagging questions as to who is the best in the various divisions.
"For sometime now, there have been heated debates as to who is who. After the fights, we will know who the best is," he said.
Al Hamilton disclosed that other top boxers including Ben Ankrah, Bilah Mohammed and many more would appear on the bill.
According to him, sponsorship money for the event has been made available by Far East Mercantile, sponsors of the ongoing Men Only boxing tournament organised by the GBA and Metro TV.
To make it a grand occasion, Mr. Hamilton has appealed to other companies to sponsor the event.
