Manchester United struggled in attack again as they played out a 0-0 draw with a resilient West Ham United. West Ham had the best chances of the first half.
Chris Smalling sent a clearance crashing against the post of David de Gea’s goal, De Gea stood up to save a one-on-one chance with Victor Moses and Winston Reid’s header struck the bottom of the post. Manchester United also benefitted from some poor refereeing decisions.
Marouane Fellaini should have been sent off for treading on James Tomkins’ leg and Bastian Schweinsteiger was lucky to get no censure at all for putting a forearm into Reid’s throat at a set piece.
In the second half, West Ham continued to look most likely to score and Mauro Zarate flashed a shot from close-range wide of the far post. Fellaini managed to miss from two yards out as Adrian pulled off an excellent stop, and Mata wasted an excellent chance of his own.
With 10 minutes to go Anthony Martial sent a shot just wide of the far post as the pressure grew, as did Jesse Lingard a minute later, but West Ham held on.
Yet another 0-0 draw for United saw them miss the opportunity to overtake rivals Manchester City at the top, with both clubs now three points behind leaders Leicester.
