Bolga: Decomposing corpses pose health risk

Decaying bodies at Bolgatanga Regional Hospital Mortuary in the Upper East Region are putting residents’ health at risk. Mortuary attendants say the police have refused to come for unidentified bodies that have already gone through postmortem. Speaking with Joy news, one of the attendants Daniel Azaah says authorities at the mortuary have also abandoned complaints severally made to them. He also added that some families who cannot afford the mortuary fees have abandoned their dead ones, compounding issues there. Joy FM's Upper East Regional correspondent Joseph Osei who visited the hospital said some of the bodies at the mortuary he saw have decomposed. He said he saw five bodies in an opened refrigerator and “the stench there you can’t withstand it”. He also cited instances where a family abandoned their relative in the morgue after observing a funeral service for him. Joseph Osei also learnt that authorities are waiting for a pathologist to arrive from Accra to perform postmortem on most of the uncollected bodies at the cost of the hospital.
