A remarkable milestone has been reached at the Bole District Hospital in the Savannah Region, where the newly constructed maternity ward, funded by the Lordina Mahama Foundation, celebrated its first triplet delivery.
On Wednesday, 25 September 2024, a mother successfully gave birth to three male infants via Caesarean section, despite prior scans indicating she was expecting twins.
Dr. Jonathan Wadeyir Abesig, a Specialist Obstetrician Gynaecologist and Lead Obstetrician at the hospital, oversaw the unexpected delivery.
He noted: “This milestone marks the first triplet delivery in the new maternity complex built by former President H.E. John Dramani Mahama and former First Lady Lordina Mahama.”
Dr. Abesig, who is also the Acting Medical Superintendent of the hospital, explained the rarity of such deliveries: “Triplet births via natural conception occur at an incidence of approximately 1 in 10,000.”
He emphasised the significance of this event, stating: “This is important to us because it tells us about the need for better diagnostic services.”
He also recognised the challenges the family will face in caring for triplets and appealed for support, highlighting the unique joys and difficulties that accompany such an event.
“This is the first time we are delivering triplets at the Maternity Complex that was built by the Lordina Foundation and John Dramani Mahama,” he revealed
