Bank of Ghana Governor, Dr. Ernest Addison, has refuted allegations of labeling Minority MPs as hooligans during the #OccupyBoG protest last October.
Dr. Addison maintained that he did not originate the reported statement; rather, it was attributed to him by a foreign media outlet that initially covered the event.
He emphasised that those who know him personally are aware that he does not use offensive language like "hooligans."
During an appearance before the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) in Parliament on Monday, April 8, Dr. Addison vehemently denied these allegations, stating that the term "hooliganism" was an interpretation by the media outlet and not an accurate representation of his words.
He reiterated his respect for Members of Parliament and asserted that he could not have used such language to describe them.
“This is what I am coming to say that those who know me and know my character…you have not heard a single word of a recorded message with me describing parliamentarians in that manner. This was some foreign journalist’s description of the conversation we had and I disowned it,” he stated.
In October 2023, a coalition of minority parliamentarians, NDC supporters, and various interest groups organised the #OccupyBoG protest, calling for the resignation of Dr. Addison and his deputies over allegations of economic mismanagement and unauthorised currency printing.
Dr. Addison in response to the protest allegedly labelled the demonstrators as "hooligans" and asserted that neither he nor his deputies would resign.
In an interview with the international business website Central Banking, Dr. Addison was reported to have described the NDC-led protest as "completely unnecessary."
However, he categorically denied the attribution made to him.
