Four persons are receiving treatment at the Begoro Government Hospital after they were attacked in what reports say was a bloody clash between residents of Dedeso and some hired thugs.

The thugs allegedly entered the community in a Kia Bongo vehicle with registration number GE 551-21.

The thugs and a Police officer, according to reports, attacked some farmers who were on their farms working.

They were allegedly sent to the town by a Chief who is claiming ownership of the resettlement lands. The Chief, Nana Bosompem, together with his men, went to a disputed land at Pertiefoo near Dedeso to question the authority of the residents to use the land for farming.

A statement issued by the Eastern Regional PRO of the Ghana Police Service mentioned that they were met with resistance as the community folks mobilised more people to retaliate.

The Chief and the Police officer, according to DSP Ebenezer Tetteh fled to the Dedeso Police station to seek refuge after sensing danger.

At least one community member and about three members of the armed thugs sustained injuries and are receiving treatment.

There is currently heavy Police presence in the community to avert further clashes as the Kia Bongo truck and a motorbike used to transport the thugs, were set on fire.

Assemblyman for the area, Randorf Papa Nii said tension is mounting as the claimant to the Dedeso Lands, Nana Bosompem keeps threatening to force all the residents out of the community.

"He claims the whole of the resettlement land belongs to him so he wants us to leave but that is not possible because we are Krobos and it was the government that brought us here when it took our land to construct the Akosombo Dam," he stated.

The people of Dedeso have been litigating with Nana Bosompem who claims ownership of all lands and other properties in the resettlement community.

They have, as a result, appealed to the National Security, the Presidency and the Volta River Authority to intervene to avert a looming chieftaincy crisis in the community.

According to the settlers, who are mostly Krobos and Ewes, they were settled by the Government during the flooding of the Volta lake as a result of the construction of the Akosombo dam in the 1960s and they have had their own Chiefs until recently when one Opanin Bosompim emerged in the town as a Chief nominated by the Fanteakwa Traditional Council.

At a press conference at Dedeso, a spokesperson for the community, Michael Teye Sackitey said some activities of the said Nana Bosompem have derailed the progress of the once peaceful community.

He accused Nana Bosompem of using land guards in terrorising farmers and the illicit seizure of properties.

Mr Teye Sackitey said some bungalows which were reserved for teachers posted to the community have been forcefully taken over by Nana Bosompem and the teachers are now being housed at the community centre.

He said reports to the Police in the District and the Fanteakwa North District Assembly have yielded no results.
