A 25-year-old cabbie rendered blind by acid poured into his eyes by armed robbers who wanted his car, has had to withdraw his five-year-old daughter from school because he no longer can afford the fees.
Now unemployed and facing a bleak future, Isaac Acquaye Danquah has also withdrawn his wife from apprenticeship to engage in any venture that may provide food on the table for the young family.
The blinded young father returned home on Thursday from the custody of the Korle-bu Teaching Hospital where he had been on admission since May for plastic surgery.
He was attacked at Agona Swedru in the Central Region on April 11, this year by robbers who splashed acid in his face and took his car away. He was consequently admitted at the Plastic Surgery and Burns Centre of the Korle-bu Teaching Hospital on April 16, with burns on the face and neck and loss of vision in both eyes.
Isaac had actually been discharged on June 12, 2007, however neither he nor his aged parents had the money to settle the over 10 million cedis bill, after the plastic surgeries on May 2 and June 8.
It took the intervention of Primex Ghana, manufacturers of Jajo brand of food products to secure Isaac’s release, following a publication of his plight by the Ghanaian Times.
Isaac was full of gratitude to his benefactors; Primex Ghana and Ghanaian Times when in the company of his parents; 67-year-old father Matthew Agbenyaga, mother Mary Atigah and two younger brothers, he paid a thanksgiving call on them.
