Information Minister Kojo Oppong Nkrumah says it is necessary for Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to outline his vision and priorities ahead of the 2024 elections.
According to him, Article 58 of the 1992 Constitution clearly states that executive power in the country rests with the president, hence, the claim by the Vice President that he did not have any decision-making authority in the Akufo-Addo-led government.
Speaking on Joy FM's Super Morning Show on Thursday, February 8, he explained that when someone wants to run for president, the person is required to articulate their vision to gain the support and endorsement of the citizens.
He stressed that if elected, the individual will then form a government made up of diverse officials and appointees to assist in executing his vision.
“It is the reason why when President Mills passed on, President Mahama, his vice president at the time, had to hold his policy address.
“He held it at the Accra International Conference Center to outline his vision because, under Article 58, he had become the President. Now, as the President, he had to articulate his own vision."
The comment follows a national address by Dr Mahamudu Bawumia at the UPSA auditorium in Accra.
Speaking during the launch of his campaign dubbed 'Bawumia Speaks', the 2024 flagbearer of the NPP had made numerous promises including pledging to abolish the controversial E-Levy, Emission and Betting Tax and the 15% VAT on electricity.
Though many have lauded him for these commitments, others remain skeptical.
His critics have questioned why he has decided to remove these taxes when his boss, President Akufo-Addo is the one who oversaw their enactment and implementation.
But the Member of Parliament for the Ofoase Ayiribi Constituency insists that the new vision by Dr Bawumia, who has served as the Vice President since 2017 and actively contributed to the administration's work, does not necessarily imply criticism of the current administration's policies.
