Bawumia enjoys goodwill

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the running mate of Nana Akufo-Addo, NPP flag-bearer has been enjoying a lot of good will among Ghanaians. The Daily Graphic continues to receive a number of good will and congratulatory messages from the general public, all lauding his competence, capability and compatibility as well as the wise choice of the NPP flag-bearer. Mr Kwesi Amoafo-Yeboah, an independent Presidential aspirant, in a statement said he deemed it befitting to congratulate Dr Bawumia on his selection. "I believe his selection is a clear indication of the fact that the political terrain of our country is gradually changing where successful professionals from other fields of endeavour must play active roles in the frontline towards the transformation of this country”. Admittedly, he said with the presence of such personalities who were self made and not dependent on political power to succeed, this will greatly influence the way we as a nation do our politics, removing the tag "dirty politics" or "politricks". He said that he was looking forward to the era when political debates would become an arena for level headed deliberations where real issues were dealt with on basis of facts and figures, and not rumours and insults. He said it was time those of us who had been sitting on the fence and complaining about politics in this country realise that that had not brought us any dividend. Nana Yaw Barimah, reports from Kumasi that a leading member of the NPP, Dr Kwame Amoako Tuffuor, had described Dr Bawumia as the right choice to partner Akufo-Addo to win the December elections. He therefore urged all party members, admirers and sympathisers to rally solidly behind Nana Akufo-Addo and Dr Bawumia to win the upcoming elections. Dr Amoako-Tuffuor who was contributing to a political debate in Kumasi at the week-end said those whose names came up for the position of running mate were eligible but Dr Bawumia topped them all as he had the requisite credentials and competence to deliver. He noted that a president should have as his vice someone who could effectively deputise for him without any difficulty. He stressed that Dr Bawumia had the pedigree and influence that could help accelerate the country's economy, and therefore his partnership with Nana Akufo-Addo could go a long way to move the party forward. He added that when in 2000 Alhaji Aliu Mahama partnered President Kufuor to win the elections, it underlined how a perfect partnership could help achieve results in politics. Zakaria Alhassan, reports from Tamale that some residents in Tamale and Walewale the hometown of the Vice-Presidential nominee of the NPP have described his selection as welcome news and a rightful decision by Nana Akufo Addo. They contended that Dr Bawumia was not only capable and competent but that his youthfulness could woo majority of young men and women to vote for the ruling NPP. The people further indicated that being a Muslim and a son of a very prominent politician from the area, his background puts him in good stead to canvass for the Muslim, Zango and northern votes for the NPP in the December general election. An ardent supporter of the NPP in ,Tamale, Ussif Yahaya, described the choice of Bawumia over his candidate, Alhaji Boniface Sadiqque, as unfortunate but was quick to add that, "even though I am disappointed, I would still campaign and vote for the party in the general election,". A citizen of Wale wale, Baba Sumaila said he and some of his colleagues in the Mamprugu area were now confused, following the nomination of the NPP "because we are not sympathisers of the ruling party. On the other hand, we would like to make history with our brother becoming the first Mamprusi Vice-President in the country." A teacher, Memuna Issahaq, also described the choice of Dr Bawumia as strategic since he was in the same age bracket and can match John Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) "boot for boot." "Indeed, I must also commend the leadership of the two parties for selecting such brilliant citizens of the north who have so much to offer this country to partner their respective presidential candidates," she stated. The acting northern regional secretary of the NPP, Mr Faisal Gbangbili, also said the north was highly honoured to be offered another opportunity to occupy the number two spot in the party after the distinguished role played by the sitting Veep, Alhaji Aliu Mahama. "We would like to express our appreciation to the national executive committee of the NPP and Nana Addo for this opportunity and to assure them that, we shall also do our best to improve on the party's fortunes in the region in the forthcoming elections," he assured. The secretary further impressed on the rank and file and the respective power brokers in the NPP to bury their difference and come together as a united force to lead the party to continue with its success story, which he noted had improved the lot of the people. For his part, the northern regional secretary of the NDC, Alhaji Abdulai Harruna on Friday, said the choice of Dr Bawumia was refreshing but stressed that it would not make any impact on the fortunes of the NPP since the electorate had made up their mind already. "Our loyal supporters in the Mamprugu area have resolved to vote us back to power because according to them, the area has been starved of development projects since the NPP government took over," he alleged.
