The flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has called on party members to end the blame games following the party’s significant defeat in the December 7, 2024, general elections.
The NPP garnered 4.65 million votes, falling nearly 1.7 million votes behind the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, who secured 6.3 million votes.
The party also suffered substantial losses in the parliamentary elections.
Speaking to party supporters at his residence a day after the Electoral Commission's official declaration, Dr Bawumia urged them not to lose hope but to remain united and work towards reclaiming power in 2028.
“I thank you for your support and encouragement. We went to the polls expecting a different outcome, but it didn’t go as planned. That is why we conceded that President Mahama and the NDC won the elections,” he stated.
He stated that the loss should not mark the end of the party’s aspirations.
“This does not mean it’s over. We have lost the battle, but the war is not yet over. I want to encourage everyone to remain focused. As you’ve seen, we essentially handed this election to the NDC—they didn’t win it outright. Their numbers have not changed since 2020, but ours dropped by 40%.
“What this tells us is that united we stand, divided we fall,” Dr Bawumia added, rallying the party to close ranks and rebuild.
Dr Bawumia reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening the party’s structures and strategising for a strong comeback in the next electoral cycle.
