Twenty-two people are facing five charges for their alleged involvement in the violent clashes at Bawku in the Upper East Region that lead to some eight deaths.
The suspects who were arraigned before the district magistrate court last Thursday face charges conspiracy, impeding public way, causing unlawful damage, rioting with weapons and possessing arms without lawful authority.
They are being remanded in custody to reappear on January 17.
The Upper East Regional Police Commander, DCOP Ofosu Mensah-Gyeabuor, told Joy News police intelligence gathered in the area suggests tension was still high between the Mamprusi and Kusasi factions but assured that police would not relent in their monitoring duties to ensure early warning signals are picked up for appropriate action.
He said some of those facing trial were found with AK 47 ammunition and other locally made ones, while some conspired to cause the disturbances with others damaging a police vehicle.
DCOP Ofosu Mensah-Gyeabuor said the Regional Security Council was holding daily meetings over the situation to help maintain the prevailing peace.
Meanwhile the Interior Ministry has reviewed the dusk to dawn curfew it imposed on Bawku and surrounding areas. While Bawku will continue to observe the curfew in its original form (from 6pm to 6am), the surrounding towns now have to clear the streets from 8pm to 6am.
