As a result of the almost six months old ethnic conflict in the Bawku Municipality and its environs, the Bawku Municipal Assembly in collaboration with the Bawku Municipal Directorate of the National Commission for Civic Education undertook an intensive and extensive citizens sensitisation campaign in 19 targeted communities of the area.
In all, 105 unit communities and three second cycle institutions namely the Bawku Technical Institute, Bawku Senior High and Bawku Senior High Technical Schools respectively were sensitised on the topic, "The need for peaceful co-existence and the rule of law.”
The objectives of the exercise were two fold. Firstly, it targeted at physically cleaning up the dirt which accumulated during the conflict and to morally and psychologically appeal to the inhabitants of Bawku on the need for peaceful co-existence.
This laudable vision of the students was facilitated by the Municipal Directorate of the NCCE and other relevant units of the assembly such as the Environmental and Sanitation Unit and the Zoom Lion sector of the National Youth Employment Programme.
The processes were funded by the Bawku Municipal Assembly with support from many sachet water producers in the area who donated water to the students.
In a communiqué presented to the Municipal Chief Executive after the symbolic clean-up exercise, Alidu Jamila, a second year student of Bawku Senior High School appealed to government to continue with the peace negotiation process to ensure that peace is restored to the municipality.
She also impressed upon citizens of the area to encourage peace, love, unity and reconciliation among all the tribes as it was before and make sure that the prevailing peace and freedom is enjoyed by all and responsibly.
Miss Jamila commended the National Peace Council, the Ghana Network for Peace Building , the Bawku Peace Initiative, the Bawku Municipal Security Council, the NCCE and other relevant bodies for their passion and humanitarian support towards achieving lasting peace in the Municipality.
In his response, Abdulai Abanga, the Municipal Chief Executive commended the students for the exercise and assured them of government's commitment and determination to ensure the return of absolute peace in the municipality.
The MCE therefore urged them to act as agents of change in their localities by educating their community members on the need to consolidate the current peace at stake in view of the impending general elections in December this year.
