Ashantigold coach Bashir Hayford has refuted claims he asked his team to boycott the medal ceremony of the Ghana Super Cup.
The two time league winner was rumored to spearhead the walk-off after he appeared aggrieved following some refeering decisions against his side.
However, in an interview on Asempa FM, Hayford stated the decision to even collect medals was conveyed to him only on pitchside
“We came for a launching, they said no medal. I was there and we asked them and they said they don’t know,” he told Asempa Sports
“But on the pitch they told me there will be medals for only the players.”
“Which CAF or FIFA match do they give medals to only the players?”
When asked about gestures he made signaling the players to the dressing room, Hayford was adamant it was a management decision
“We were asked to meet in the dressing room for an emergency meeting. I knew I was not part of the medals.”
The former Medeama boss made it further clear the decision to boycott was not his
“Is the team mine?”
“I don’t control the team. Our team has a board and management who take such decisions.”
“I cannot singlehandedly take decisions on my own. I only coach the team. I take technical decisions.”
Hayford will lead his side to face Algerian side MO Bejaia this Sunday.
