The Electoral Commission has stated that it will proceed with its activities towards the 2020 elections including the voter registration exercise despite the ban on the social gathering.
Dr Serebour Quaicoe, the Director of Electoral Services in an interview with Accra-based Citi TV said, "the ban does not affect us."
"It is our understanding that it does not affect our operations. So as it is now, we can still go ahead," he added.
President Akufo-Addo has imposed a ban on social gathering as part of measures to curtail the spread of the coronavirus in the country.
According to the President, there should not be meetings of any sort with more than 25 persons and this measure is to hold until notice on lifting of the ban.
Despite the ban, the Electoral Commission says it will begin its voter registration exercise next month, June 2020. The exercise is expected to last until July 2020.
According to Dr. Serebour, the ban on social gathering has not been part of reasons for a break in the ECs activities.
He said the Commission has been engaging in stakeholder meetings to explore ways to continue with their activities amid the outbreak of Covid-19.
“Our understanding is that the ban doesn’t affect our operations,” Dr Serebour emphasised.
"Coronavirus is new to us, therefore, we were engaging in stakeholder meetings to see the best ways to go about our activities. As we know, the virus has come to stay so we need to find our ways around it," he added.
The Electoral Commission has scheduled the voters' registration exercise to begin from the last week of June to the end of July 2020.
The exercise is expected to start each day from 7:00 am to 6:00 pm at all 33,367 polling stations, which will serve as registration centres nationwide.
