President-elect Prof John Evans Atta Mills will not prosecute members of the outgoing government when he resumes office, the presidential-elect’s spokesperson Mahama Ayariga has said.
Instead, he said, the new government will focus attention on fighting corruption and reducing it to the barest.
In an interview with Joy FM, Mr Ayariga said Prof. Mills is determined to fight corruption like never before.
The administration of outgoing President John Agyekum Kufuor came under a barrage of criticisms for how it sought to fight corruption.
Mr Kufuor regularly demanded that allegations of corruption must be backed with some amount of evidence.
Mr Ayariga said although the president-elect may adopt similar processes to fight the menace, his modus operandi will slightly be different.
According to him, Prof. Mills’ government would “activate the appropriate institutions” to deal with cases of corruption, as the individual might not have the “capacity and the expertise to gather the evidence.”
In a swift reaction to the Mr Ayariga’s comment, a lawyer, Owusu Afriyie of the NPP said the president-elect would have a difficult challenge taming what he described as the “hawks” in the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
He said the president-elect’s quest to reduce corruption in the country could remain a mirage as Prof Mills did little to fight the canker when he was in office as vice president to former President Jerry Rawlings.
Meanwhile Prof Mills is due to be sworn into office on Wednesday, less than a week after being declared president-elect by the chairman of the Electoral Commission, Dr. Kwadwo Afari-Gyan.
