A labour consultant Austin Gamey says agitation by some workers of the state media about the salaries of their bosses is misplaced. Reports about the huge salaries the chief executives of some state media organisations have generated a lot of discontent among staff who complain of salary disparities between them and their bosses. A story carried by an Accra weekly on Tuesday indicated that the Director-General of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) William Ampem Darko receives a monthly salary of GH¢20,000 while some staff of the corporation receive as low as GH¢200. The revelation follows recent reports of workers at the Ghana News Agency (GNA) and the Daily Graphic complaining about disparities between their salaries and those of their bosses. Responding to the issues however, Mr Gamey said the workers would be wrong to draw such analogies. He said salaries of persons on contract are likely to differ from those on lifelong employment in the same organisation as the two belong to different payment modules. “You don’t have a lifelong job therefore you have to be paid reasonably well to take care of your going away,” he stressed. He maintained the managers on contract with some of the state owned media organisations “are expected to have a contract with targets to perform and if [they’re] performing well then [they] should not be compared,” he emphasised. Mr Gamey said rather than complaining, workers on lifelong employment in the country’s state-owned media houses must negotiate for better conditions of service. Story by Fiifi Koomson
