The Republic of Ghana is scheduled to hold General Elections on 7 December 2024. As the country makes final preparations, H.E. Moussa Faki Mahamat, Chairperson of the African Union (AU) Commission, is deploying an African Union Election Observation Mission (AUEOM) headed by H.E. Sahle-Work Zewde, Former President of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, and supported by H.E. Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, Member of the Panel of the Wise and Former Vice President of the Republic of South Africa.
The AUEOM's mandate is drawn from various AU instruments, notably the African Charter on Democracy, Elections, and Governance (2007). It also aligns with Aspiration 3 of the AU Agenda 2063, which aims to ensure good governance, democracy, respect for human rights, justice, and the rule of law. The AUEOM comprises 62 short-term observers (STOs) and technical electoral experts from 27 African countries.
Following a pre-election assessment mission from 27 October to 2 November 2024 and based on its objective and independent assessment of all key electoral processes before, during and after the 7 December 2024 elections, the AUEOM will render its findings aimed at contributing to the strengthening of Ghana’s future elections and in solidarity with the Member State’s consolidation of democracy.
