Mr. James Victor Gbeho, foreign policy advisor to the Mills-led government, says the new government under President John Evans Atta-Mills will vigorously pursue African unity as part of its foreign policy.
Even though Ghana’s foreign policy has remained unchanged over the last five decades, Mr. Gbeho says President Kufuor's policy was “a de-emphasis on African Unity.”
He told Joy News on Monday, Atta Mills’ new role will be to re-enact former President Nkrumah’s call for African unity.
He stressed, the new government will take leadership positions to ensure more integration in the sub-region.
With the current government having been a critic of the former administration over its handling of the Gambia Killing of over 40 Ghanaians and other African nationals, Mr. Gbeho says the killing “cannot be left hanging in the air.”
Forty-four Ghanaians en-route to Europe were murdered in the Gambia in 2003, a murder perceived to have been engineered by key institutions of state and under presidential orders.
The Gambian government has so far thwarted efforts to conduct investigations into the killings.
Vice President John Mahama, then in opposition, called for a tougher stance to be taken on the matter and to sever relations with the Gambia.
But Mr. Gbeho says that will be the final option to take, an option he thinks will not achieve much for the country.
He said the country will demand more from the Gambia including possible compensation for the victims.
Mr. James Victor Gbeho said the country will lead the crusade for a single currency, ECO to be adopted, even though not too many countries have met the convergence criteria.
