Asuavo Security Ghana Limited has spelt out some safety and security tips for individuals who will be voting in the December 7, 2024.
In a statement signed by the Chief Executive Officer of the company, Richard Osei, while Government and the Electoral commission are doing their best to put in place an extensive security plan for the election, individuals are also advised to adopt basic safety and security practices.
Below is the guide for voters:
A. LEAVING THE HOUSE TO VOTE
1. Know your polling station in advance and familiarise yourself with the voting process.
2. Keep a close tab on political events with possible security implications around your area. Stay up to date with
daily news from trusted sources (national dailies, radio and television stations).
3. Before leaving, make sure your house is properly locked and secured. Don’t leave any gap or chance for an opportunistic criminal to gain access. This includes closing any windows that lead onto the street; make sure they are closed so that no one can quickly grab valuable items that are close at hand.
4. Leave the valuables at home. You don’t need to take flashy jewelry or other expensive items with you, but don’t forget your ID documents especially your VOTER ID Card.
5. Maintain good communications with family members, friends, neighbors and colleagues. Let them know your destination whenever you are going out.
6. Do not take children along to the polling centre.
7. There is safety in numbers. If you have a neighbour who is also on their way to vote, you can consider asking if they want to walk or drive with you to the voting station.
8. Avoid wearing clothing or carrying items with company or political insignia which may give you unwanted attention.
B. AT THE POLLING STATION
• When you get to the voting station, park your car in a safe place away from the polling station and lock all doors before you leave your vehicle.
• Ensure you locate your delegated queue if any when you get to the polling station.
• Keep close eyes on the voting process as you join the queue and await your turn.
• Avoid engaging in political discussions at the polling Centre as these could easily turn violent.
• Have your Voter ID with you whiles in queue.
• In the event that suspected vigilantes invade the polling Centre or attempt to snatch ballot boxes, leave the vicinity immediately and stay away until it is safe to go back to the polling station again.
• Do not accept gifts or handouts of any kind at the polling station.
• Vote wisely and legally when it is your turn.
C. AFTER VOTING
• Keep your vote safe. Do not disclose who you voted for.
• Go home directly after casting your vote.
• Do not disclose the candidates you voted for.
• Avoid any political discussions after voting.
• Lock your car while driving.
• Avoid picking strangers and make sure there is no one following you. If you see any unfamiliar vehicles following you as you get to your gate, consider taking another trip around the block first. If the vehicle keeps following you, call the Police emergency numbers or report to the nearest police station.
• Monitor local media and other sources for regular updates of the security situation and keep all Emergency Contact Numbers handy.
• Whatever the outcome of the elections, be moderate in your discussions.
• Be reminded that you are primarily responsible for your security.
Most importantly, participate and VOTE during this Election because voting is your civic responsibility.
