Victims of the military brutalities in Ashaiman herded together, beaten and forced to roll and exercise in mud.

The lawyer of one of the victims of the military brutality in Ashaiman, Emmanuel Kumador says his client has died.

According to him, the victim, Alhaji Mohammed Musah, died on Monday.

Mr. Kumador disclosed this on Joy FM's Top Story on Thursday.

Narrating how the incident occurred, the lawyer said when the victim heard of the presence of the military in the locality, he attempted to flee and fell.

This particular victim, according to the lawyer, was hypertensive, so he became ill after the fall until his demise.

“The late Alhaji Mohammed Musah was one of the victims of the military brutalisation on March 7, 2023 within Ashaiman. He was sitting at the frontage of his house and when he saw the soldiers, the soldiers shouted and so he started running, he run to enter his house, when he entered his house he fell.

“He is already a hypertension person, so his pressure shot up and was admitted at the hospital, we were just informed that three days ago he could not survive,” Mr. Kumador revealed.

JoyNews checks from a medical doctor responsible for giving medical attention to many of the victims, Dr. Al Hassan Hanif, revealed that many of the victims reported with lacerations on their heads, their backs had multiple bruises, and some of them were bleeding profusely.

When asked about the reported death, he noted that he has also heard about it.

He said there is a post-mortem underway to see if there's a link between what happened and the death of Alhaji Mohammed Musah.

“Yesterday, around this time, I was reliably informed that one of them passed away and I told the convener that I was following to the referral point to find out the cause of death if post-mortem has been taken, so that we can get the actual cause,” the doctor said.

It would be recalled that on Saturday, March 4, 2023, a young soldier was murdered at Ashaiman Taifa.

His death however angered the military for which reason in the early hours of Tuesday, March 7, some military personnel invaded Ashaiman and brutalised some residents in a search for the murderers of their colleague.

They also took some of the residents away for interrogation. Most of them have since been released.

The MP for the area then condemned the act by the military men.

According to him, although the killing of the soldier was a dastardly act, “we cannot take the laws into our hands whether we are lawmakers or security agencies.”

However, the Ghana Armed Forces in defense say the operation was merely a swoop in a man-hunt for some criminals and not for vengeance.

According to GAF, “the military operation, which was sanctioned by the Military High Command, was NOT to avenge the killing of the soldier but rather to fish out the perpetrators of the heinous crime.”

They added that their “swoop” had led to the arrest of about 184 suspects aged between 21 and 47 years old and they have since handed them over to the military police who will subsequently send them over to the Ghana Police Service for screening and further action.

In a related development, the Minister of Defence, Dominic Nitiwul has described the incident as regrettable.

According to him, in shaping a nation, it is always difficult to ensure that there is absolute peace due to the inevitability of such unfortunate incidents as happened in Ashaiman.

Meanwhile, the Defence and Interior Committee of Parliament together with the Ministry of Defense and the Military High Command on Thursday, March 16 paid a visit to the Ashaiman community to commiserate with the bereaved family.
