Ghana skipper Asamoah Gyan could win his first title with new club Al Ahli today in the Arabian Gulf Super Cup.
Ahly will come up against Al Jazira in the Super Cup and Gyan who impressed on his debut for the UAE side is hoping to be on the winning side.
“The match will be played in Egypt, which has a large population and is a nation with an intense love of football. Egypt is not only famous for its football fans in the Arab region but also throughout Africa, so I am sure that we will see a very large crowd at the game, which will give it an extra special dimension and atmosphere.”
Preparations for the silverware-deciding match, Gyan says, have been positive.
“Everything is going well in the build-up to this match; we trained hard in Dubai and we also had the challenges of two Arabian Gulf Cup games against Al Nasr and Al Ain, which I think has been the best preparation for such a strong fixture of this nature, especially after a big win against Al Ain,” the 30-year-old striker said.
As the newest addition to the squad for the Red Knights, Gyan could be forgiven for not yet being settled at his new club, but the Ghana international insists he feels right at home since signing for Al Ahli.
“I’m still in the early days of my career with this team and I haven’t completed a month here yet, but owing to my previous experience here in UAE it was very easy for me to settle in with the players very quickly and I’ve had no difficulty with integrating in the dressing room.
“’I already knew many of the players here before signing, and I have a strong desire to win trophies with this group.’’
‘’Hopefully we can start with the Arabian Gulf Super Cup – a title I have won before with Al Ain – but it would make it a dream debut for me with Al Ahli,” Gyan enthused.
Champions of the league Al Ahli and President’s Cup winners Al Jazira will face-off in Egypt, 30 June Air Defence stadium, with the Super Cup title up for grabs.
