Arsenal may not have won a silverware in six years but here in Ghana, its fan base lifted the maiden edition of the Asempa FM and Multi TV Fire for Fire Soccer Gala 2011 tournament played at the El-Wak Sports Stadium on Saturday.
It was a bubbling excitement as hundreds of fans of the most listened to Sports programme, Fire for fire gathered at the stadium not only to celebrate the uniqueness of the programme and its passionate host, Countryman Songo, but to show love for their most cherished European clubs.
It is no doubt that Ghana abounds in great football talents but the exhilarating skills by football fans shown on Saturday was a great sight to behold.
In a round-robin format, fans of ten European clubs - Chelsea, Liverpool, Arsenal, Manchester United Fan Club, Manchester City Fan Club, Bayern Munchen Fan Club, Real Madrid Fan Club, Barcelona Fan Club, Inter Milan Fan Club and AC Milan Fan Club competed for the coveted trophy and cash prize at stake.
Top of Group B was the Barcelona Fan Club and Arsenal Fan Club match which surely lived up to expectation. The fans/players exhibited the most outstanding, fluid game similar to what has been associated with their parent clubs.
AC Milan Fan Club topped Group A after beating Manchester United, Liverpool Fan Club, Manchester City Fan Club and Bayern Munchen Fan Club to qualify for the Grand finale. Arsenal Fan Club on other hand beat Chelsea Fan Club by just a single point to top Group B to also book their place in the Grand finale.
The final was fiercely contested with none of the team scoring in regulation though both teams created some decent chances. Arsenal Fan Club however managed to silence AC Milan Fan Club in the penalty shoot-outs by beating them 4-3 to win the coveted trophy and cash prize.
Arsenal together with the trophy and cash prize also took the golden and silver balls of the competition as Emmanuel Mensah and Ernest Addo came first and second in the best player award. David Titiati of AC Milan Fan Club took home the bronze ball. The best defender of the Gala went to Godfred Dickson of Chelsea Fan Club whiles the most promising Goalkeeper went to Abraham Kpodji of Bayern Munchen Fan Club. Mark Gizo of AC Milan Fan Club was crowned the goal king after scoring four goals.
Head of Events and Promotions at Asempa FM and Adom FM Frank Odoom said the objective of the tournament is to bond the brand Fire for Fire with its listeners.
Asked why the choice of the European-based clubs and not the local clubs, Odoom stated they wanted to find out how organized supporters of the European-based clubs are in Ghana.
He was quick to add however that going forward, the tournament will add supporters of the local clubs.
